Call your MP: public money for public good

Our communities are struggling right now. Many of us have lost our jobs and our livelihoods, and we’re all struggling with the long-term uncertainty of the coronavirus and economic crises. But instead of creating long-term, clean jobs to help our communities thrive, the Morrison Government plans to give billions of public dollars to fast-track dangerous gas projects. It’s clear the Coalition Government is putting the profits over people.

How we win

By contacting strategic MPs regularly over a sustained period of time, we can show them that there is public opposition to the gas led recovery plan, they have no social license to proceed with it and that we demand they put people before profits!

How to call an MP

Decide on who you are calling and when- remember their office hours are generally 9am-5pm, but you could always leave a voicemail outside of this time. If this is your first time calling, it could be good to call before or after hours and leave a message so you can practise to build up your confidence.  You could even make a roster with your AYCC group or friends to schedule your calls over a week - here’s a handy template you could use.

*NOTE* You will be talking to the MP’s staffer, not directly to the MP - however staffers are very important people who can pass your message directly to the MP!

Top tips for calling

  • Share why YOU personally care about this issue and why you don’t want public money going to gas - tell your personal story

  • Be confident and polite

  • Take notes on what they say

Key Messages

  • Our communities are struggling right now. Many of us have lost our jobs and our livelihoods, and we’re all struggling with the long-term uncertainty of the coronavirus and economic crises.

  • The Morrison Government’s dirty gas plan will spend millions of public dollars to open up new gas basins and build monstrous gas pipelines all across the country – setting off a carbon bomb our climate and communities cannot afford.

  • We need to be investing in our communities, providing affordable housing for all, a social safety net that ensures nobody is forced to live in poverty when times are tough, and clean energy projects to power it all.
