Dear Treasurer Jim Chalmers,

I’m emailing you in regards to Labor's commitment to fund $1.9 billion to the Middle Arm facility in the Northern Territory. Since last year’s election, it has been great to see Labor follow through on some of your commitments to tackling the climate crisis. However, I am extremely disappointed in your continued funding and support for the gas industry.

Young people showed up and voted for climate action at the last election, and they deserve better. While we are facing a rising cost of living, massive increases to the cost of study, and unstable housing, your government has instead committed to expanding fracking for gas in the Northern Territory, through the funding of $1.9 billion to Middle Arm.

Middle Arm’s business case shows that the project was designed to make fracking in the Beetaloo Basin, and offshore gas extraction in the Barossa gas field viable [1]. Both of these gas developments are strongly opposed by Traditional Owners [2]. Not only this, Larrakia people say that Middle Arm’s expansion could cause irreversible harm to cultural artefacts, stories, and dreaming, with the project just a 'stone's throw away' from some of the only remaining Larrakia rock art. In the wake of the Juukan Gorge destruction, Labor committed to new Indigenous heritage protections designed to protect sites like this from future damage, but now, Larrakia people are saying they have not even been consulted on Middle Arm. The Morrison Government committed funding to Middle Arm with no cost-benefit analysis, no climate impact analysis, no public health analysis, and without advice from Infrastructure Australia. The Petroni report also found that Middle Arm would have significant adverse climate and health impacts [4] I am concerned that Middle Arm’s development puts Australia’s emissions reduction obligations far out of reach.

Together, with over 60,000 petition signers, I am calling on your Government to rule out funding for gas processing, manufacturing and export at Middle Arm Industrial precinct and consult with Traditional Owners and the local Northern Territory community on the best use of $1.9 billion investment.
